TOUR DESCRIPTION
Soria, the easternmost province of Castilla y Leon, equally attracts for its monumental wealth and overwhelming nature.
In the middle of Urbion mountain natural park, at 1,770 metres above sea level, Laguna Negra (Black Lagoon) is surrounded by an ancient glacier circus, among extensive forest grounds, where wild pines prevail.
According to tradition, the Black lagoon is bottomless. In reality, its depth does not exceed 8 metres.
The site can be visited almost all year round, during its cool summer, surrounded by snow or covered with multicoloured autumn tones.
Usually visitors can get to a car park located 350 metres from the lagoon, except in the summer months or on some holidays, when cars have to be left at a lower parking area, at “Serrá” pass, 2 km from the lagoon. Small buses regularly run up to the upper car park.
For more than 40 years, every first Sunday in August, a very popular swim crossing has been organised here.
The darkness of its waters, the overwhelming mountain circus and the lushness of the surrounding forests have given rise to various legends. One of them is “La tierra de Alvargonzález”, by Antonio Machado. The text was included in his poetry collection “Campos de Castilla”. In 1910 Machado toured these mountains, where a peasant let him know about this legend of envy, death and revenge.
The tour is completed with a visit of Vinuesa, a charming mountain village whose sandstone houses and palaces are clustered around a monumental Renaissance church.
